Stump grinding
Stump grinding
Stump grinding is one of the more common ways to effectively remove tree stumps after the tree is cut down. With the right stump grinders, businesses such as ours, engaged in establishing gardens or caring for and servicing green spaces, are able to efficiently remove even the stumps left behind by the largest trees.
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is otherwise known as stump cutting. Stump grinding is done by a fast-rotating cutting disc that chips away the wood and grinds it into sawdust. Stump grinders are usually heavy machines powered by internal combustion engines with high horsepower and torque. Stump grinders can be self-propelled structures, trailers or other machines to be pulled by a tractor. They are expensive, therefore not every business can afford to buy a stump grinder. Businesses most often offer grinding services using hired stump grinders, or choose to provide grubbing services.
How does the stump grinding process work?
Stump grinding is a quick and simple activity that does not require a lot of resources or human labour. Stump grinders have adjustable grinding width, making it easy to match the width of the stump to be removed and the depth at which the trunk is embedded. The largest stump grinders are usually capable of chipping stumps to a depth of about 50 cm below ground level and grinding stumps of any diameter.
Grinding means that the stump grinder methodically drives over the stump of a felled tree. Typically, stump grinders have vertical, high-speed knife discs on a special arm, which allow efficient grinding in even the most difficult spots. Stump grinders are often equipped with a track drive so they do not damage home gardens or sensitive areas. Most often, the stump is ground by being driven over several times; it all depends on the size of the stump and the depth of the roots embedded in the soil.
Stump grubbing or grinding – which method is better?
You already know what stump grinding is and how the process works. So, will grubbing produce the same results? Definitely not. Many people confuse the final result obtained in these two different processes. Grubbing involves the complete (total) removal of root systems. The main advantage of grubbing is that plants can be planted in exactly the same spot where the previously felled tree grew. Grinding, on the other hand, involves cutting away the main (middle) part of the stump and its root inflows, so it allows planting only shallow-rooted plants with narrow root balls in the same place. In general, grubbing is more cost-effective, but it can be done mechanically only in places where a backhoe loader can reach. If you have a heavily landscaped garden and you want the least invasive removal, then ask for stump grinding.
Forest and Garden provides stump grinding services in the area of Warsaw as well as the entire Mazovia Province.
